Characterizing lentic fish assemblages and community-environment relationships: An evaluation of natural lakes and reservoirs in Iowa, USA

چکیده
Characterizing fish assemblages in lentic ecosystems is difficult due to high habitat heterogeneity and the diversity of methods available to sample fish. Therefore, multiple sampling methods are almost always necessary for gaining reliable estimates of species richness and for sampling different sizes of a particular species. However, most research on the use of multiple sampling methods has targeted recreationally-important species. As such, little information is available regarding the influence of multiple methods and timing (i.e., temporal variation) on characterization of lentic fish assemblages. We sampled six lakes and impoundments seasonally (i.e., spring, summer, fall) with beach seines, benthic trawls, boat electrofishing (i.e., day and night), modified fyke nets, mini-fyke nets, and gill nets (fall only) to evaluate the combined influence of sampling methods and timing on the number of species and individuals sampled. Probabilities of detection for species indicated strong selectivities and seasonal trends. Additionally, patterns in seasonal probabilities of detection and species 1 Iowa State University, Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management, 339 Science II, Ames, IA 50010, USA. 2 U.S. Geological Survey, Idaho Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, Department of Fish and Wildlife Sciences, University of Idaho, Moscow, Idaho 83844, USA.

متن کاملSelecting fish-based metrics responding to human pressures in French natural lakes and reservoirs: towards the development of a fish-based index (FBI) for French lakes. Running headline: Response of fish-based metrics to human pressures in French lakes
Word count: 149 words) 1. Fish-based indices of biotic integrity (IBI) have been developed for many lotic systems but remain scarce for lakes. The goal of the present study was to assess the responses of lentic fish assemblages to anthropogenic pressures when environmental variability was controlled for, and to compare them between French natural lakes and reservoirs. 2. Environmental features,...
متن کاملFish Effects on Reservoir Trophic Relationships
To study the relationships between the biomass of reservoir communities and to examine the differences between reservoirs with different fish assemblages, we used limnological and fish data for 31 Argentinean reservoirs. Despite conspicuous systemic differences with lakes, reservoirs dominated by visual zooplanktivorous fishes have had phytoplankton biomass drastically higher than reservoirs wi...

1. While fish-based Indices of Biotic Integrity have been developed for a wide array of lotic systems, equivalent tools have seldom been adapted to the monitoring and assessment of lakes. Major difficulties arise in such work: (i) collecting data that allow statistically robust analyses, (ii) choosing the relevant variables to describe the biotic, environmental and anthropogenic data sets and (...
متن کاملComparative Growth of Four Species of Fish in Three Different Types of Iowa Artificial Lakes
Growth of four species of fish are compared in three different types. of Iowa artificial lakes and reservoirs. The lakes were classified by similarity of physical, chemical, and biological characteristics. Scale samples and total length measurements were obtained from 14,705 fish at 71 impoundments. Largemouth bass, bluegill, black crappie, and white crappie growth was greatest in Group I lakes...
